BQ24781 IC

The Texas Instruments BQ24781 is a high-efficiency battery charge controller IC used in laptops and other portable electronics. Its primary function is to manage the charging of 1- to 4-cell lithium-ion battery packs while also monitoring power consumption, a feature known as “Hybrid Power Boost Mode”. 
Features and functionality
  • Hybrid Power Boost Mode: The BQ24781 is designed to support high-performance applications by allowing both the AC adapter and the battery to provide power to the system simultaneously. This helps prevent the adapter from “crashing” during periods of high CPU demand, such as during gaming or video rendering.
  • High-accuracy monitoring: The IC can monitor the adapter current, battery discharge current, and system power with high accuracy. This data allows the host processor to throttle back the CPU speed to manage power effectively when necessary.
  • Automatic power source selection: The BQ24781 automatically selects the power source, seamlessly switching between the AC adapter and the battery as needed.
  • Programmable limits: The integrated circuit (IC) allows a system’s power management microcontroller to program the input current, charge voltage, and charge/discharge current limits via a System Management Bus (SMBus) interface.
  • Enhanced safety features: The IC includes protection features for overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit conditions involving the battery, inductor, and MOSFETs.
  • Fast transient response: It has an ultra-fast transient response of 150 µs to enter boost mode.
