The Texas Instruments BQ25710 is a synchronous buck-boost battery charge controller for charging 1- to 4-cell batteries from a variety of power sources. It is frequently used in notebooks, Chromebooks, and other space-constrained, portable applications. The BQ25710 is host-controlled through an SMBus interface.
Key features
Flexible charging: Supports a wide range of input sources, including USB adapters, high-voltage USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) sources, and traditional power adapters.
Automatic buck-boost operation: The controller can seamlessly transition between buck, boost, and buck-boost modes to ensure the battery is charged efficiently, regardless of the input source voltage.
Narrow-VDC (NVDC) power path management: The system can run from the adapter even with a completely discharged or absent battery. It also allows the battery to supplement the system when the adapter is overloaded.
USB On-the-Go (OTG) support: When an input source is not present, the IC can convert a 1- to 4-cell battery’s power to generate an adjustable output voltage (3 V to 20.8 V) on the USB VBUS for powering external devices.
Integrated monitoring: The BQ25710 has an integrated analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for monitoring system, input, and battery voltages, currents, and power levels with high accuracy.
CPU throttling support: Provides a programmable PROCHOT output that can signal the CPU to throttle back if adapter, battery, or system power limits are exceeded.
Vmin Active Protection (VAP): Supplements the battery with energy from input capacitors during system power spikes to prevent system crashes.
Input Current Optimizer (ICO): Automatically extracts the maximum input power from the adapter without causing an overload.
